Thirukural-Chapter 18- Not-Coveting

நடுவின்றி நன்பொருள் வெஃகிற் குடிபொன்றிக்
குற்றமும் ஆங்கே தரும்.

Without justice if you covet other's man wealth
Your family will destroy and give room to crime

படுபயன் வெஃகிப் பழிப்படுவ செய்யார்
நடுவன்மை நாணு பவர்.

The just do not do unjust things to get other's things
fearing the blame that comes along

சிற்றின்பம் வெஃகி யறனல்ல செய்யாரே
மற்றின்பம் வேண்டு பவர்.

Those who want everlasting happiness
Do not do non virtuous things that give petty happiness.

இலமென்று வெஃகுதல் செய்யார் புலம்வென்ற
புன்மையில் காட்சி யவர்.

Those who have conquered their senses
Do not covet and get other's things
Even if they live in poverty

அஃகி யகன்ற அறிவென்னாம் யார்மாட்டும்
வெஃகி வெறிய செயின்.

What is the use of all knowledge
If you covet other's things and try to get them

அருள்வெஃகி யாற்றின்கண் நின்றான் பொருள்வெஃகிப்
பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்.

Those who desire blessings and stand in the right path
must not desire other's things
If they do so, they will be spoiled

வேண்டற்க வெஃகியாம் ஆக்கம் விளைவயின்
மாண்டற் கரிதாம் பயன்.

Do not covet other's wealth
The results will not be desirable

அஃகாமை செல்வத்திற் கியாதெனின் வெஃகாமை
வேண்டும் பிறன்கைப் பொருள்.

How to not loose your wealth
is by not desiring other's wealth

அறனறிந்து வெஃகா அறிவுடையார்ச் சேருந்
திறனறிந் தாங்கே திரு.

Know virtue and do not covet other's things
Then Mahalakshmi will know your value and she will come to you

இறலீனும் எண்ணாது வெஃகின் விறலீனும்
வேண்டாமை யென்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Coveting other's things will bring in destruction
Non-coveting other's things will bring in success
