Thirukural- Chapter 7- Being blessed with children

பெறுமவற்றுள் யாமறிவது இல்லை அறிவறிந்த
மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற.

Among blessings
there is no greater blessing
Than being blessed with
Intelligent children

எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா பழிபிறங்காப்
பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின்.

When a person is blessed with children
of good character
Bad things cannot happen for
seven births to come

தம்பொருள் என்பதம் மக்கள் அவர்பொருள்
தம்தம் வினையான் வரும்.

Children are our karma
Children's karma depends
on what we do

அமிழ்தினும் ஆற்ற இனிதேதம் மக்கள்
சிறுகை அளாவிய கூழ்.

Sweeter than ambrosia is the food
given to us by our children's hands

மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்றுஅவர்
சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு.

Children touching us
is a pleasure to the body
Hearing them speak
is pleasure to the ears

குழல் இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள்
மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்.

Musical instruments are sweet
to those who didn't listen to
their children

தந்தை மகற்காற்று நன்றி அவையத்து
முந்தி இருப்பச் செயல்

Father's gratitude to the son
must be in helping the son
excel in life

தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து
மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது.

When an offspring is more brilliant than the parent
All parental souls feel happy

ஈன்ற பொழுதின் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன்மகனைச்
சான்றோன் எனக்கேட்ட தாய்.

When a son is considered an example to others
The mother is happy
than the day she gave birth

மகன்தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்தந்தை
என்நோற்றான் கொல்எனும் சொல்.

A son's help to his father
is for people to speak
what penance the father did
to get such a son
