Thirukural-Chapter 20- Refraining from useless talk

பல்லார் முனியப் பயனில சொல்லுவான்
எல்லாரும் எள்ளப் படும்.

One who talks useless talks in a way that listener's get angry
will be criticised by all

பயனில பல்லார்முன் சொல்லல் நயனில
நட்டார்கட் செய்தலிற் றீது.

Useless talk before many is worse than
doing bad things to friends

நயனில னென்பது சொல்லும் பயனில
பாரித் துரைக்கும் உரை.

The useless talk a person talks
will say that the person is non-virtuous

நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லா ரகத்து.

Talking useless talk before many
will make one quit all good things

சீர்மை சிறப்பொடு நீங்கும் பயனில
நீர்மை யுடையார் சொலின்.

When a good person talks useless talk
His good qualities will leave him

பயனில்சொல் பாராட்டு வானை மகனெனல்
மக்கட் பதடி யெனல்.

One who always talks useless talks
cannot be considered as human
but as garbage

நயனில சொல்லினுஞ் சொல்லுக சான்றோர்
பயனில சொல்லாமை நன்று.

It is okay to talk , talk that is not good
But must not talk, talk that is useless

அரும்பய னாயும் அறிவினார் சொல்லார்
பெரும்பய னில்லாத சொல்.

Those who know to analyse the merits
will not talk talk that is useless

பொருள்தீர்ந்த பொச்சாந்துஞ் சொல்லார் மருள்தீர்ந்த
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்.

The one who has clear intellect
will not talk, useless talks

சொல்லுக சொல்லிற் பயனுடைய சொல்லற்க
சொல்லிற் பயனிலாச் சொல்.

Speak the words that are useful
Speak not the words that are useless
