Thirukural-Chapter 21- Fearing Bad Karma

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை யென்னுஞ் செறுக்கு.

The ones with bad karma are not afraid
of bad deeds
But the ones with good karma are afraid of bad deeds

தீயவை தீய பயத்தலால் தீயவை
தீயினும் அஞ்சப் படும்.

Bad things bring in bad results
therefore bad things are feared
like fire

அறிவினு ளெல்லாந் தலையென்ப தீய
செறுவார்க்குஞ் செய்யா விடல்.

Not doing bad to those who did bad to us
is the highest form of knwoledge

மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க சூழின்
அறஞ்சூழுஞ் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு.

Even by forgetfulness do not think bad for others
if you do so
Virtue will think bad things for you

இலனென்று தீயவை செய்யற்க செய்யின்
இலனாகும் மற்றுப் பெயர்த்து.

Thinking you do not have anything
do not do bad deeds
if you do
You will again become person with nothing

தீப்பால தான்பிறர்கண் செய்யற்க நோய்ப்பால
தன்னை அடல்வேண்டா தான்.

If you don't want bad karma to torture you
refrain from doing bad things

எனைப்பகை யுற்றாரும் உய்வர் வினைப்பகை
வீயாது பின்சென் றடும்.

A person with a worst enemy can survive
but not a person with bad karma

தீயவை செய்தார் கெடுதல் நிழல்தன்னை
வீயா தடியுறைந் தற்று.

Bad karma chases and tortures a person for his bad deeds
like shadow following a person and being at his feet

தன்னைத்தான் காதல னாயின் எனைத்தொன்றுந்
துன்னற்க தீவினைப் பால்.

If you love yourself
refrain from doing bad things
even the smallest amount

அருங்கேடன் என்ப தறிக மருங்கோடித்
தீவினை செய்யான் எனின்.

When a person refrains from bad activites
know him as a person who has no evil
