Thirukural-Chapter 22- Duty to the society

கைம்மாறு வேண்டா கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்
டென்னாற்றுங் கொல்லோ உலகு.

When the noble helps us
it is like rain showering for the earth
We cannot payback

தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருளெல்லாந் தக்கார்க்கு
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு.

All the wealth that comes from hardwork
is for doing charity to the right ones

புத்தே ளுலகத்தும் ஈண்டும் பெறலரிதே
ஒப்புரவின் நல்ல பிற.

Being dutiful to others is a goodness
one cannot get even in the heavens

ஒத்த தறிவான் உயிர்வாழ்வான் மற்றையான்
செத்தாருள் வைக்கப் படும்.

One who helps others and lives, really lives
others should be considered as dead

ஊருணி நீர்நிறைந் தற்றே உலகவாம்
பேரறி வாளன் திரு.

The wealth that a noble person has
is like the lake were all beings drink water

பயன்மரம் உள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
நயனுடை யான்கண் படின்.

When a noble person acquires wealth
it is like a tree, ripe with fruits, at the center of a village

மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
பெருந்தகை யான்கண் படின்.

Like medicine that nourishes all parts
The wealth of a noble person serves all

இடனில் பருவத்தும் ஒப்புரவிற் கொல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்.

Those who realise the importance of being dutiful
will help others
even when their wealth is minimum

 நயனுடையான் நல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயும்நீர

செய்யா தமைகலா வாறு.

One who is dutiful is said to be in poverty

when he is unable to do good for others

ஒப்புரவி னால்வருங் கேடெனின் அஃதொருவன்
விற்றுக்கோள் தக்க துடைத்து.

If something bad can happen to the dutiful

that kind of badness must be received at any cost.
